VYMFAQs

What kind of yoga is VinyasaYoga?

Answer:  A form of exercise offering stretching for flexibility, balancing for centering, strengthening for proper posture and alignment, and breathing & meditation for relaxation. Ashtanga and Iyengar styles fuse to create Vinyasa Yoga, which synchronizes breath with movement to achieve cardio benefits between postures.

What should I wear for my yoga class?
Answer:  Comfortable, stretch clothing that clings to the body. Yoga is done barefoot. Also avoid using creams on your hands and feet before class, which can make your mat slippery.

Is yoga only for really flexible people?
Answer:  Absolutely "no."  It is a common myth that only very flexible people can do yoga;  when infact, more and more doctors are recommending yoga for skeletal, muscular, and nerve problems for individuals whose muscles and joints are having problems due to lack of flexibility and exercise.  Yoga helps you lose the tension you carry around with you.  It is a release.  Don't think that the instructor will expect you to become a pretzel--it's a misconception many have about yoga.

What are the differences between practicing yoga at home with a video rather than practicing in person with an instructor?
Answer:  If all you have time for is a yoga video, it's better than nothing at all, of course.  But if you find the time, you will find that a yoga instructor you feel comfortable with will help you feel more in touch with yourself during your yoga practice.  The energy of a face-to-face practice is unbelievably more motivating, also, than a video.

Who does yoga?

Answer:  More and more men for one.  Yoga as a fitness routine is becoming more popular in a time when holistic approaches to health and well-being are sought-after.  Men, women and even children are turning to yoga as fun alternative to high-intensity, hard-on-your-joints aerobic sessions.  Yoga helps bring focus and purpose into your life.  If you don't believe--try it.  Yoga may or may not be for you, but on thing is for sure:  it is something to do at least once in your life.  If and when you decide to try it, be sure it's at your fitness level for the best practice possible.

What does "Namaste" mean?

Answer:  "Namaste" is a Sanskrit term that means, "The inner self within one person greets the inner self within another."  It is greeting another person with the highest regard.  It has noble and humble purpose, which is to understand, accept, and welcome the fact that everyone is equal in the highest regard--the higher self.

What is the ideal setting for yoga?
Answer:  The best practice is conducted in an environment with fresh air. This is why many studios open their windows and many other classes are conducted outdoors, under natural conditions. The temperature should be comfortable--not too cold and not too hot.

Do I need to bring anything to class?
Answer:  It is nice to purchase your own mat, so you are the only one using it. A limited amount of mats are available on location. Also, if you are really serious about becoming more flexible, bring along a yoga strap (a robe belt will also do) and two blocks as props to help you with the more difficult poses.
